As they walked on Evelyn’s hand twitched as she went over her short good-bye with her sister. Marie truly believed they would be reunited in a few days at the agreed rendezvous point, most of the other group likely thought the same. With her ears perked up she listened in on the boasting of those around her.

“We’ll blast all the way through them!”

“Right through the pass.”

“Nothing’ll stop us!”

The brevity of Evelyn’s good-bye began to haunt her thoughts.

“Hey look out!” She tripped over a large rock directly in her path. Quickly she through up her arms to brace her fall. Her right arm was caught mid-fall, causing her left side to lurch slightly. Looking up she noticed Derek, who had been walking at her side, holding tightly to her forearm. “You OK?” Evelyn nodded slightly.

“Just a bit distracted, thanks.” He let go of her arm.

“Better get undistracted, we’re going to be needing that killer aim of yours in a bit.” He gave her a small nudge with his elbow. Evelyn smiled lightly as she walked on, side-by-side with Derek. After a few moments of silent walking Derek whispered to Evelyn, “You’re worried aren’t you?” Her smile dropped as she glanced over to Derek. “She’ll be OK. She’s smart.”

“But not strong.”

“We’ll wait for them.”

“They won’t want to.”

“But we will anyway.”
